About Us

Created in 2019, Camaquiri Conservation Initiative (CCI) is a 500 acre wildlife refuge located in the lowland Caribbean rainforest of northeastern Costa Rica.

​

​​Our mission is to protect and enhance the biodiversity within the refuge while operating a field station and trail system for students, researchers, local residents, and private groups to experience and learn about rainforest ecology.​​​

CONSERVATION

Managing the property to protect and enhance its biological resources and encouraging conservation of the rainforest through education.

EDUCATION

Providing a place to introduce and immerse students and visitors in the ecology of a tropical rainforest and the ecology and behavior of its inhabitants.

RESEARCH

Providing a place to conduct relevant short-term and long-term research projects to both improve management and learn more about the interaction of organisms with their environment.

COMMUNITY

Providing educational and scientific outreach to the surrounding community and encouraging local residents to become involved in station activities.

We Welcome

  • In session college classes to visit CCI during their spring, summer, or winter breaks to provide their students with an immersive experience to supplement their tropical rainforest ecology studies

  • College professors to teach courses related to tropical rainforest ecology at CCI during summer or winter breaks

  • Researchers conducting relevant short-term and long-term research projects related to tropical rainforest ecology and tropical rainforest conservation, restoration, and management

  • Birding and wildlife educational tours

Booking
Details

  • Cabin accommodations for groups of 5-to-30 people

  • Current Rate: 35,000 colones / night

    • Includes lodging and 3 meals / day 

    • 35,000 colones is approximately $50 - $75 / night US dollars, depending on the exchange rate

    • Rates will be more for groups with fewer than 5 people to cover cost of staffing

  • Daily use of dining or lecture hall spaces is available for education or conservation related meetings, contact CCI for a quote

  • Bookings must be arranged through a CCI- approved Costa Rican eco-tourism professional

  • Not included: travel to / from airport, wildlife tour guides (these are provided by your eco-tourism professional)

Safety
First

  • We pride ourselves in providing a safe rainforest experience. ​

  • All groups who use the trails are given a safety orientation upon arrival.

  • All groups are required to be accompanied by a Costa Rican eco-tourism professional while on the trails.

  • We limit the number of visitors to provide the best experience for our guests and to minimize disturbance to the rainforest and its inhabitants.
